If your only experience with a carpetbag is that thing Mary Poppins carried around, Milicent Armstrong is here to open your eyes. It all started when the Boston native tagged along on a buying trip with her mom, who owns a jewelry shop. “I traveled with her seven years ago to Istanbul and fell in love with the carpetbags, but the shapes and designs weren’t quite modern. I wanted to do something younger women would want to wear,” she recalls.
Though Milicent studied interior design at Boston Architectural College, she didn’t have experience crafting something like this. But what she lacked in construction skills, she made up for in enthusiasm for the Turkish kilim carpets that served as the source material. “I’ve always had a passion for textiles, and weaving is a huge part of that culture,” she notes. “Rugs are reused to make bags, furniture covers, and other things. It’s so practical because they are sturdy and wear beautifully.” In 2012, she started combining said rugs with leather in her own way, under the name Artemis Design Co. “Artemis is the Greek goddess of the hunt. Since my company is all about hunting the world for textiles and treasures, I thought that this name suited us perfectly.” Which is to say: Happy hunting. —jane gauger
