MEET THE DESIGNER: BOY SMELLS

Boy Smells
David Kien and Matthew Herman SHOP ALL
A guys’ night out might seem like the least likely breeding ground for a luxury candle line, but that’s exactly when the L.A. duo David Kien and Matthew Herman began brainstorming their collection, appropriately dubbed Boy Smells. A guys’ night out might seem like the least likely breeding ground for a luxury candle line, but that’s exactly when the L.A. duo David Kien and Matthew Herman began brainstorming their collection, appropriately dubbed Boy Smells. The friends, who were both feeling a little burned-out (zing!) by their fashion-industry gigs (Matthew in design and David in production), were lamenting that the luxury lifestyle brands they loved were pretty inaccessible to most, pricewise. As Matthew says, “Clothing can be so much about what other people think of you. We wanted to create something for people’s inner selves to enjoy, which led us to the world of scents and home goods.”

Candles were the most obvious entry point—but before you start flashing-back to that SNL skit about the endlessly re-gifted pillar, just know that David and Michael’s creations are not things anyone would give up without a fight. Each never-cloying, mysteriously great scent—like Coin, with notes of copper, moss, saffron, tobacco, and (hey!), rust—is packaged in a sleek black tumbler with an of-the-moment millennial pink label and looks much more expensive than it costs. As Matthew says, “We wanted to create something high-concept but also inclusionary and with a sense of humor—naming it Boy Smells but using pink packaging is our way of playing with the gender stereotypes around scent.” And, boy, does the result smell like success. —courtney conway
