For most kids, socks are an annoying necessity your mom buys in bulk. But for Roxanna Beatrice, they were always sartorial star. “I grew up collecting high-end dress socks that I would find flipping through European fashion magazines," explains the L.A. native. “I’ve just always had a sock fetish. They really are a statement piece you can wear from day to night.”

As her obsession grew, the design school grad struggled to find the delicate, gauzy ones of her dreams stateside. So in 2014, she decided to jump in feet-first and cut and sew her own, using a late 1800s hosiery pattern as a starting point. But it’s unusual materials are that really set her line, Darner, apart from everything else out there—they come in plush gold velvet, black-and-white windowpane mesh, and faux-fishnet styles, all make in her local garment district. "Knowing exactly where everything comes from and being on a first-name basis with everyone that works for my company has been fundamental to our success,” she explains. Lena Dunham and Gia Coppola are fans, but perhaps the best sign she’s made it? Tween Roxanna would have been ecstatic knowing Darner’s slip-ons have graced at least three editions of Vogue‚ including the Italian one. —neha kulsh
