Ashley Spierer was an O.G. devotee of crunchy skincare—so much so that when, in 2013, she left her marketing career in NYC behind for a maternal-health startup in Chennai, India, she brought along a slew of her go-to products. But once she got there, they started falling short. “The humidity made my hair HUGE! A woman I met suggested styling with pure coconut oil , so I tried it and immediately thought the difference was amazing,” she recalls. The experience prompted her to take a closer look at the so-called natural products that she was slathering on, bringing her to the realization that, as she explains, “There aren’t a lot of regulations in place determining what can be labeled as ‘natural’, which can lead consumers to feeling tricked.”

Ashley began dropping new kinds of oils, like sage and grapeseed, in her daily face-and-body routine and was hooked. This became such a thing for her, in fact, that when she landed back in Brooklyn a few years later, she decided to make mixing them up a full-time gig. In 2016, she launched a trio of dryness-quenching oils under the name Daughter of the Land, incorporating ingredients that are either fair-trade or organic, or both—even the recycled glass and paper packaging is sustainable. Oh yeah, and those potent blends, in scents like Sage and Grass, are a one-step route to glowy, balanced skin. Says their creator, “I never have more than 15 minutes before running out of the house, so I’ve got to be efficient! I created these products to show people that you don’t need to spend tons of time and money when it comes to skincare.” —katie nave freeman
