Kyle Ng, the man at the helm of the men’s apparel-slash-lifestyle line Farm Tactics, fully intended on going into the film industry when he moved to Los Angeles in 2004 from his Bay Area high school, but when inspiration strikes, he responds. As he says, “We’re just trying to tell narratives as individuals and create our own journey.”
Two things are key to the Farm Tactics ethos. Curiosity comes first: Whatever is gripping Kyle at the moment will likely show up in his next designs—which is why his spring collection incorporated mud cloth, indigo pants, and tote bags with digital desert camouflage, influenced by the African blues band Tinariwen he’s been grooving on lately and the headspace he’s been dedicating to thinking about freedom and the desert. The second distinction is his move to cater his designs to the stores that are stocking him, switching out colors or materials to match the mood, meaning every Farm Tactics score tells the story of the man who made it, the place you got it, and how you decide to make it your own. —seth putnam
