Los Angeles-based jewelry designer Grace Lee doesn’t really take no for an answer. Accept, as evidence, the story of her signature lace ring: When Grace was cooking up her spectacularly unique design, which looks a whole lot like its namesake material in sturdy metal, manufacturers shook their heads incredulously. “No way!” one told her. “It won’t work,” said another. But Grace plodded on, asserting that she would bring this thing to life. Slowly but surely, impossible turned into unlikely, unlikely into maybe, and maybe into success.
Grace credits this go-get-‘em attitude to her lack of formal jewelry schooling—she comes from a background in finance and didn’t pick up her accessories skills from anyone in particular. She got her start creating custom engagement rings for friends and fangirls—a first love she still devotes as much time as possible to—and, in all of her work, she puts an emphasis on practicality, versatility, and timelessness. But make no mistake: Grace designs pieces that are utterly special, just built to last—in hopes that daughters and granddaughters can one day inherit some really rockin’ jewelry. —dana covit
