A college costume party with the theme “bad taste” (yes, really) was the unlikely breeding ground for Sophie Trelles-Tvede’s brilliant business idea. On her way out the door, the then-18-year-old student at University of Warwick in Germany tied the twisty cord from an old landline phone into her ponytail and promptly forgot about it—until she woke up the next morning without a the blowout-ruining ponytail bump or a sore scalp she got from regular hair ties. Within a year, she and close pal Felix Haffa had developed a small, coiled plastic prototype of what’s now known as Invisibobble...and launched the business with just $4,000. It was an instant hit, landing them on Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe list at a time when their peers were still mastering drinking games and stressing over midterms. Ask Sophie about building a hyper-successful biz with 80 employees, and she’ll give you this advice: “It’s cheaper than ever before to start your own company—and the product does not need to be complicated to succeed.” We’d say the proof is in the ponytail. —liz sheldon
