Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: The best partnerships are founded on a shared knowledge of dentistry. At least, that’s how it worked for the two women behind jewelry line Lady Grey. While studying sculpture at the Massachusetts College of Art, Sabine Le Guyader and Jill Martinelli bonded over similarly toothy teenage gigs. Jill changed rubber bands at an orthodontist’s office, while Sabine pulled down after-school shifts assisting on teeth cleanings at her dad’s practice. Their time getting mouthy turned out to be more than just a conversation-starter—it also honed their grinding, polishing, and mold-making skills, which would come in real handy when they decided to launch their own fine jewelry line in 2009.
“There are a lot of similarities between the tools, materials, and processes used in dentistry and what we do now,” Jill explains. “We started out with this shared language.” The duo’s prior experience with suuuuper-small-scale, first impression minded work shows in their intricate designs, like inch-long earrings carved in the silhouette of a face, twisting rings that spiral up fingers, and brooches that double as teeny, single stem vases. Each piece promises bite—and every collection gives you plenty to chew on. —claire luchette
