When Danielle Ribner launched Loup, she was all about tennis clothes—for girls who care about Sharapova, spin, and style. “I wanted to start the brand small and focused, but also give myself an arena where I could push the boundaries,” Danielle explains. “Tennis was the perfect place to develop a following of women who wanted something a little different from what was out there.”
So she dove right in, a year after finishing a master’s program at Parsons. “It just felt like I needed to do my own thing now if I wanted to do it at all,” Danielle says. “I was young and knew that that was the time to take risks.” But as she started crafting her first collection, she realized just how all-consuming the undertaking was. She spent weekends and weeknights at the studio, reluctant to leave because “you just feel like if you’re not working then something’s not getting done.”
Though her line has grown immensely since 2008—it now includes plenty of casually polished pieces that look fly far away from a hard court—the production process has stayed pretty much the same, with everything made right in the U.S. of A. “I know every single person who works on Loup’s garments,” Danielle says. “Loup still feels like a community rather than just commerce.” —genevieve ang
