After a particularly fun bout of teenage-to-adult acne (and dozens of futile dermatologist visits), Katya Slepak had had it. But, unlike most of us who’ve struggled with incessant breakouts, she channeled her angst into something other than sobby diary entries and hundreds of dollars worth of drugstore hauls. “I realized how harmful a lot of the conventional ingredients are for our bodies and the environment, and I delved into studying natural product formulation, herbalism, and aromatherapy to create products that really suited my skin,” says Katya, who found her answers (at last!) in holistic approach—and Mālayā Organics was born.
Turns out, Katya didn’t need salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide (or any parabens, either) to make her complexion happy. “Using oils can actually help balance overproduction of sebum, which is typical for problematic skin,” she says, adding that the ethically sourced essential oils she concocts most of her products from have antibacterial, antiseptic, and antifungal properties. But there’s nothing medicinal-feeling about her creations—something that you discover very quickly the moment you swipe on her luxe hair and body oils, lavender lip balm, or wildly effective face serum. —Lauren Elizabeth
