Like a lot of us, graphic designer James Quigley spent a fair amount of time picturing himself starting a new hobby (in this case, letterpress) before getting down to brass tacks. “I saw that there was a local art studio offering classes, thought it was cool, and proceeded to do nothing about it,” he laughs. After nudging from a friend, the Bethesda, Maryland, resident enrolled and had a textbook epiphany. “This sounds so cheesy, but as soon as I felt that initial crunch when the type and ink cut into that nice poofy paper, it was like I must do this,” he recalls. And so when he’s not teaching college design courses, he does just that, turning out cards bearing intentionally corny (and totally charming) dad jokes like this gem: “What do you call a fake noodle? An impasta!” Ba-dum. —liz sheldon
