It made sense that Gloria Noto decided to go to art school, but pretty quickly, she turned a corner. “Fine art was too close to my heart for me to make it a job,” remembers Gloria. “I was 18 years old, and I just felt strangely confident that I should become a makeup artist. I dropped out and knew I was going to move to New York or L.A., and the weather was better in L.A.”
Luckily, the Detroit native had grown up taking notes on how her product-obsessed mom and sister did their faces, even though loads of lipstick wasn’t her personal preference. There was plenty of hard work and dues-paying, but let’s flash-forward to Gloria nailing amped-up natural looks for It girls like the Haim sisters and Shailene Woodley (who’s now her biggest fan, NBD).
The obvious next step was creating her own line, but Gloria took a minute to get her mission statement straight first. “So much of the beauty industry is about making you believe that you need something more to be whole, and I wanted to offer something beyond that,” she explains. After a soul-searching stint to Thailand, Gloria launched a collection of multi-use formulas that are feel-good in every way. Think a lip and cheek tint with inflammation-busting turmeric and a woodsy body oil with circulations-stimulating black pepper. “Everything in the line can double as your cosmetics and your toiletries—so they’re what you need to look good, but they can double as a perfume, or an oil cleanser.” —liz sheldon
