When New Zealand native Liana Ashenden got her PhD in English lit from Cambridge, switched gears to work in financial services, and then abandoned both of those paths to start a skincare line, you better believe there was a good reason. “Unfortunately I found that many natural brands clogged my pores, smelled bad, or just didn’t do anything to enhance my skin. If a product doesn’t work, it’s a waste of money,” Liana says. So she and a team of scientists set out to create a new back-to-basics line that still felt luxurious—incorporating ingredients like natural konjac sponge (a gentle exfoliator) and moisturizing cupuacu fruit butter (it’s similar to cacao) and swearing off common beauty-world chemicals like parabens, phthalates, and sulfates. It took three years, but in 2016 Liana introduced Nudu Natural Beauty, a collection of freshly scented, scary-stuff-free replacements for everything on your bathroom shelf, from face wash to eye cream—all as hardworking as the PhD/banker/entrepreneur who created them. —courtney conway
