You think you’re resourceful? Well, meet Paola LaMorticella. “I grew up in a cabin with no running water and artist parents, and I’ve always just made things that were missing,” she remembers. Those Little House on the Prairie skills came in handy when, as a new mom, she discovered her son Romeo had super sensitive, dry skin—so she whipped up a homemade balm out of olive oil, shea oil, and beeswax to soothe it. At the time, the Portland local was also styling and doing makeup for some seriously powerful women, so she had a few extra test subjects for her new creations. “I was working with the US women’s soccer team, in the Mia Hamm and Brandi Chastain era, and a group of them really didn’t like makeup. So I mixed color into some of the extra balm and used it on their cheeks and lips,” she recalls. The supremely moisturizing, tinted blend also scored major points with her friends, and in 2014, it got some snazzy, twist-up packaging and a name: Olio e Osso. These days, she has nine balms in the mix, countless fans (Gwyneth Paltrow among ‘em), and, if you ask us, one honorary degree in taking matters into her own hands. —courtney conway
