Tyler Haney’s relationship to fitness is a love-love one—growing up in Boulder, Colorado, exercise was involved “in everything you did, like hiking to school or climbing a mountain to walk the dogs.” Plus, she was such a track star that she was offered a big-deal college athletic scholarship. She opted to step away from the hurdles and tiny running shorts, though, to attend Parsons, embracing the other thing that defined her childhood: making clothes.
When Tyler was a kid, her mom co-owned a resort-wear company. “I grew up amongst really creative women, and they always encouraged me to have the ambition to start my own thing,” Tyler says. So, post-graduation, she went for it, launching a line of activewear “that spoke to me as a multifaceted person and not as an Olympian ultra-marathoner or a trophy wife.” Enter Outdoor Voices, with is sleek hoodies and running leggings in city-friendly colors that somehow ooze cool while wicking sweat.
In 2014, the athleisure (see what we did there?) line opened its first brick-and-mortar store in Austin, Texas—the laidback lifestyle of the city offered a natural complement to the frantic one of NYC, where the company’s based. 2015 brings a second shop near OV HQ along with, according to Tyler, “more research into technical fibers. So not sexy, but I’m obsessed!” And let’s not forget the most important thing: Giving every other fitness line out there a run for its money. — genevieve ang
