For the four founders of Public Supply, the concept of selling writing essentials to support public schools evolved over time—and plenty of beers. Already the masterminds of the Brooklyn design firm Studio Tack, Jou-Yie Chou, Leigh Salem, Brian Smith, and Ruben Caldwell have résumés too impressive to list in full here (Columbia University! Ace Hotel! You get the idea!). It was their own access to excellent educations that spurred the happy-hour deliberating around how to give back in some way—which, in 2012, led to Public Supply, their second venture that donates 25% of the sales of its lush collection of notebooks (some have velvet covers!) and pencils to provide art materials to classrooms that need them most. And the do-gooding goes even further: "We decided to become a B-corp because it ensures that our service our workers, environment, and community,” says Brian, of the fantastic founding foursome. Surely, all this will make crossing something off your to-do list feel even better. —katie nave freeman
