Choose anything from Rose Lazar’s line of paper goods, party supplies, and encouraging ephemera (think award ribbons emblazoned with sayings like “Big Cheese”), and you’re pretty much guaranteed a shot of cheerfulness. “We focus on positivity, good vibes, lucky symbolism—things like that,” she says. A fine-art major and New York native, she was living in Chicago in 2004 when she started making stationery as a way turn a profit with her printmaking skills. Now based closer to the East River than the actual Great Lakes (which is to say: Brooklyn), Rose has turned what started as a small paper goods company into an operation that includes wooden wall decor, prints, heart-shaped balloons, and confetti—which is actually cut by-hand. Also in the works? A line of textiles and wallpaper, so you can be fully surrounded in the Great Lakes experience—joy-sparking at its finest. —maren ellingboe
