If you’re dreaming of leaving your trash-strewn city life behind, might we direct your attention to John and Linda Meyers, a pair of former Manhattan interior designers who decamped to rural Maine? There, they make prettiest-smelling candles and boldly striped soaps you’ve ever seen—which are inspired by Italian architect Ettore Sotsass’s furniture, of course. So how’d they go from the height of seventies chic to their own cottage industry? “We wrote a book and were doing these kind of out-there art installations and projects,” says John. “And Linda was really the voice of reason, suggesting that we try something a little more accessible.”

“I meditated on what we could do that combined our design sensibility but that we could also make entirely at home, including the packaging,” Linda explains. “And it was so obviously candles and soaps.” But, characteristically, they don’t go about it quite like anyone else: Their process starts with color first, nailing down the right opacity and hue for each bar, then researching a scent to match—like warm cedar and vanilla (black and white stripes) or grapefruit and clementine (ombré translucent orange). Adds Linda, “A lot of people have boring bathrooms—our soaps are a way to add an element of beauty and surprise that’s not permanent.” — liz sheldon
