Caroline Ventura’s Rad Camera Collection

Caroline Ventura, the designer behind jewelry line Brvtvs, and her husband Michael are very aesthetically inclined, and they’ve amassed a winning set of vintage, rehabbed, and brand-spanking-new cameras. Even more impressive than the collection itself is the fact that they actually use them. Here are four of the stars. “I got this old 8mm spy camera on eBay. We actually filmed our wedding video with it.” “This is an old Polaroid SX-70, but the people at The Impossible Project completely refurbished it. My husband gave it to me for Christmas, and it takes really amazing photos.” “A lot of the cameras are vintage, but this is one of my favorites because it’s just so different than the others. It’s an eight frame that I got at Urban Outfitters, and I really like playing with it. There’s something really nostalgic about it—like a Fisher Price My First Camera.” “I think out of all of them, this one gets the most use—this little Brownie. I made the strap for it because the original broke off. It’s really cool if you look through the viewfinder.” Click here to score the (very photogenic) piece that Caroline designed just for us.

Caroline Shops the Greenmarket

Considering she puts so much of herself into her work, it’s no surprise that Caroline Ventura, of the understated jewelry line Brvtvs, likes to get down with the equally hardworking growers at Manhattan’s most prominent farmers’ market. “I hate to sound like one of those people who’s like, ‘I do everything locally.’ It’s not something I’ve always done, but it feels really nice to get to know the farmers,” she explains. It also doesn’t hurt that she and her husband Michael live just a few blocks away, making these stops a Saturday-morning ritual.Migliorelli Farm“This farm has really great apples. I like Honeycrisps. There’s one called the Pink Lady that’s super sexy-sounding. I’d like to say that that’s my favorite, but I don’t know that I could do it with a straight face. I actually go for the apple cider donuts more. I like a full fat with my apple.”Lavender by the Bay“This lavender stand is crazy—you can smell it through the whole park. It’s really nice.” Beth’s Farm Kitchen“They have a blueberry jam that’s delicious. It’s really great on toast.”  Roaming Acres “I’ve never had any of the ostrich eggs, but I’ve had the meat—and the ostrich guy is hilarious. All of the farmers are a little kooky, and it’s nice to talk with them. They get really excited when you want to know about their food.”The Cut Flower Vendors“I tend to kill plants, and the florists here teach you little tricks for making flowers live longer, like putting a certain amount of bleach in the water. I do two spritzes of bathroom cleaner, and that seems to work really well. I’ve heard 7UP works, too, and putting a penny in a vase of tulips is really great—there’s something about the copper.” Click here to get a look at the limited-edition piece Caroline made just for Of a Kind.

Caroline Ventura Does a Bang-Up Job

You might not know from looking at them, but the bracelets that Caroline Ventura of Brvtvs made for Of a Kind were borne out of some intense pounding—muffled, thankfully, by the music being blasted from her speakers. Here, the New York designer explains the process of creating their standout detail. Click here to score one of the 30 bracelets Caroline made exclusively for us. “Each piece begins from a long piece of wire that I cut and manipulate into different shapes—I like the idea of creating something unique out of something so simple. I also really love that, at first, the wire is soft and flexible, but the more I work with it and hammer it, the stronger it gets. There’s something really metaphoric in that.”“I use a few different types of hammers, but ones with a domed end are my favorites. It’s really important to use consistent pressure so the piece hammers out evenly, and I find it easier to do that with a domed surface rather that a flat one, which can sometimes leave big dents in the metal.”“It’s almost meditative for me to sit down and hammer out piece after piece. I turn my music up really loud and zone out for a few hours. This is the finished piece after I drill holes on both sides. I hammer on top of a towel to absorb some of the noise.”“After doing the drilling, I clean up any rough edges with a little file. I’ve been really into hammering out simple shapes and then filing them down to make something really unique and different.”“Here, I’m just finishing up the last few pieces, before putting them in their bags to be sent to their new homes.”
