Listen Up: Essential Cookbooks and the Guy Drawing Every Person in New York

It’s February! Are ya maybe wavering in your no-takeout resolution? Claire and Erica are here to help, with a roundup of their favorite cookbooks and the best recipes therein. As a counterpoint, dynamo illustrator Jason Polan shares his love Taco Bell and talks about his book, Every Person in New York (you read that title right).

 

But first: Our next #ReadingThings pick is the delightful and sorta creepy Mr. Fox by Helen Oyeyemi. We’re talking about it 2/27—can’t wait!

On Erica and Claire’s go-to cookbooks and staple recipes...

  • It’s All Good by Gwyneth Paltrow with Julia Turshen is full of dressing gold—especially the anchovy and lemon, yogurt tahini, and Old Bay ranch versions. Don’t sleep on the roasted cauliflower with chickpeas and mustard, leeks with shallot vinaigrette, or salmon with maple syrup, Sriracha, and lime, either.
  • Continuing the Julia Turshen streak, her recent Small Victories has great (and simple) ideas like dates with mascarpone, olive oil fried eggs with lemon and yogurt, a take on patatas bravas, and her famous Julia’s Caesar.
  • For another addictive caesar dressing: How to Cook Everything by Mark Bittman.
  • Claire loves A Modern Way to Cook by Anna Jones and makes these three on the reg: tomato-miso-sesame soup, broccilini fry, and saffron apricots.
  • For Erica’s classic dinner-party dish, bake up the eggplant cheesecake from Plenty More by Yotam Ottolenghi.
  • Or, make the perfect ratatouille care of The Art of Simple Food by Alice Waters and Patricia Curtan.
  • Good and Simple: Recipes to Eat Well and Thrive by Jasmine Hemsley and Melissa Hemsley has an A+ take on green bean salad. Secret ingredient: adzuki beans.
  • Last but most certainly not least, the book that got Chris to cook, Cooking for Mr. Latte by Amanda Hesser.
