4 Books and 3 Bookstores That Are Rockin’ 1 L.A. Designer's World

Stuff We Love 04/18/2017

Cynthia Horrigan has a knack for evoking all kinds of things in her jewelry—a set of inverse, geometric earrings represent both the East and West coasts, and it’s easy to see how a seed inspired the sliver-like gold charm on a necklace. Those real-world associations are no accident—the L.A. transplant voraciously haunts bookstores for new ideas, seeking out the kinds of images that just burn themselves into your brain. Here are a few of her all-time fave sources—and a trio of spots to hunt down some finds for yourself.

4 BOOKS!

A NEW SCULPTURISM: CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE FROM SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

BY CHRISTOPHER MOUNT

“I’m really inspired by the architecture of Southern California. I love the geometric simplicity and clean lines of the homes designed by architects here in the eighties and nineties like Frank Gehry, Richard Neutra, and Thom Mayne. This book was a complement to an exhibition at the MoCA and is one of my favorite resources for minimalist design inspiration.”

WABI-SABI FOR ARTISTS, DESIGNERS, POETS & PHILOSOPHERS

BY LEONARD KOREN

“It’s really important to me that all of my jewelry is handmade. There’s something special about the slight imperfections of the hand, and I try to embrace that in each and every one of my pieces. This book introduced me to the concept of wabi-sabi, a Japanese aesthetic idea that emphasizes the beauty of imperfection. Wabi-sabi stresses the importance of the integrity of natural objects and includes characteristics like asymmetry, intimacy, and simplicity, all concepts that are integral to my design process.”

BRUNO MUNARI: CIRCLE SQUARE TRIANGLE

BY BRUNO MUNARI

“Bruno Munari was a prolific graphic designer in the early 20th century, and this book is his in-depth study of the three basic shapes. I’m drawn to simplicity, and I always strive to say a lot with a little. This book is a great visual reference for my design method—it’s a really interesting look at the significance of basic geometry throughout art and design history and reveals how much you can do with the simplest of forms.”

AGNES MARTIN

EDITED BY BRIONY FER AND FRANCIS MORRIS

“I love the subtlety of Agnes Martin’s work. There’s something really beautiful about how quiet and contemplative her paintings are. She spent many years living in New Mexico, and a lot of her paintings were inspired by the desert environment there. Lately I've been feeling really inspired by the colors and shapes of the desert landscape surrounding L.A., so I’ve been especially drawn to her work recently. I picked up this book at Hauser & Wirth a few weeks ago, and it’s been helping me form ideas around my next collection.”

3 BOOKSTORES!

HENNESSEY AND INGALLS BOOKSTORE

“This place is a great resource for art and design research—it’s the largest visual arts bookstore in the Western United States. I like to get lost in there. They have a great collection of fashion and jewelry books, but what I really love is their section on Southern California architecture. That’s where I discovered my love of Richard Neutra.”

HAUSER & WIRTH

“The bookstore at this gallery is pretty small but impressively stocked. They represent some of my favorite female artists like Jenny Holzer, Mary Heilmann, and Pipilotti Rist, and they have a great selection of art books on female artists. Last time I was there, I left with an amazing book on Agnes Martin.”

THE LAST BOOKSTORE

“This place is right by the diamond district in downtown L.A. I like to peruse it when I’m killing time between running jewelry errands. They buy and trade and have a huge selection of cool and weird used volumes.”
