Top of Mind: Sarah Fox on the Best—and Worst—Parts of Being a Designer (and More, Too!)

Top of Mind BY liz 06/02/2017

Welcome to Top of Mind, featuring a designer who’s been a part of the Of a Kind fam since wayyyyyy back (like, before Snapchat). This round, Sarah Fox, the charming, rock-steady woman who’s been dreaming up Cursive’s wishlist-worthy necklaces (think snake-y gold beads and lapis) for over a decade.

BEST PIECE OF ADVICE, LIKE, EVER:

“I love the mantra ‘Keep your head down and get to work.’ It’s so simple. But it's an excellent gutcheck at times when you're having a drama/WTF/I'm so lost moment. If you're a small-business owner, there is never a shortage of idle work, organization, and big-picture thinking that needs to get done. Focus intently on any of those areas, and it will carry you through the bumpy parts.”

PLACE THAT YOU THINK EVERYONE SHOULD VISIT:

“Venture to southeast Utah. Rent a car and pack a cooler with some some healthy food. Take it all in—Arches, Bryce, Canyonlands, Monument Valley, Vermillion Cliffs. Some of the most awe-inspiring moments of my life were there. Arizona, too! Go see the Grand Canyon, of course, and Sedona, Arcosanti, and Saguaro National Park. Just go to the Southwest—you’ll never regret it.”

LIFE HACK YOU WON’T SHUT UP ABOUT:

“Making large batches of six-minute soy eggs to eat throughout the week in nearly every meal. Meal-prepping something fancy makes me feel super together and on top of it, and these eggs are really a win. I also do batches of slow-roasted tomatoes, another win.”

FAVORITE PART OF BEING A DESIGNER:

“The people part. I will never, ever tire of connecting with buyers and clients that are happy to buy, sell, and wear Cursive pieces. It fills up my cup on the daily. I tried having a sales rep for a couple years but really missed having those communications for myself.”

LEAST FAVORITE PART:

“Social media. The constant nagging question of wondering if I’m doing it right. Mehhhhhhhh. Also, tracking down expensive supply packages that are needed ASAP but have somehow vanished or have been re-routed. It hasn't happened that many times, but it leaves an emotional scar.”

GO-TO RESTAURANT:

Lula Cafe in Chicago has been consistently lovely. Brunch, lunch, dinner, or a bar snack with a drink—they do it all with class and grace. I usually order off their specials menu.”

THING YOU’VE WATCHED/READ/HEARD  RECENTLY THAT YOU CAN'T STOP THINKING ABOUT:

This Washington Post article that details Sean Spicer's timeline for answering some questions but then also avoiding reporters after the Comey firing. It's haunting if you're a fan of the free press and our democracy. Don't read before bed. And Pod Save America has been restorative for my soul this year.”

RELIABLE OUTLET FOR A GOOD, DISTRACTING LAUGH:

I've recently discovered Pimpa_Wan, a pet prairie dog on Instagram that the owner dresses up in ah-mazing outfits. Some of them feel very Little House on the Prairie, which is so full circle it hurts.”
