Your So-Fresh Guide to Marrakech

Key to the City BY genevieve ang 07/12/2017

When crisscrossing the globe in search of vintage beads is your day job, you get pretty good at travel research. Your standards for outta-this-world, non-work-related trips also end up being pretty high. That’s most definitely the case for Ronni Kappos, who counts the American Southwest and Eastern Europe as her to-go spots for supplies—and in turn, picked Morocco for her next-level vacay. Come for the tiled interiors; stay for the mint tea, argan oil, and spa spoils—Ronni Kappos is here to show you the way.

Stay

RIAD FARNATCHI

“This hotel was originally a private home in the middle of Medina, the old city, in Marrakech. The service was excellent, and it was a quiet sanctuary in total contrast to the bustling souks just outside the door.”

DESERT CAMP MOROCCO

“Traveling outside of Marrakech is worth it! I spent three days luxury camping in the Sahara at Desert Camp Morocco, and it was so beautiful and satisfying to just sit on the dunes.”

Eat

LE JARDIN

“The Le Jardin is a favorite with the European crowd, so everyone is very stylish. The lamb tagine was delicious.”

NOMAD

“This restaurant offers a modern twist on classic Moroccan cuisine, and I really enjoyed the lamb burger and fries there.”

Do Things

JARDIN MAJORELLE and LE JARDIN SECRET MARRAKECH

“I loved all the hidden spaces in Morocco. The buildings look plain from the outside, but you open the door to a secret garden, a beautiful tiled courtyard, or someone’s well-appointed home. I especially enjoyed Jardin Majorelle, a garden that Yves Saint Laurent also loved and restored in 1980. For a modern take on the style, go across town to the newly built garden Le Jardin Secret Marrakech.”

BEN YOUSSEF MEDERSA

“This is one of the oldest colleges for Islamic study and a great example of Islamic architecture. You can even take a guided tour.”

HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS

“Definitely make time to go check out the High Atlas Mountains—it’s easy to hire a private driver through your hotel. You can buy argan oil products en-route from one of the many women-run co-ops you’ll pass.”

GALERIE LE PACHA

“Rug-shopping is a must-do! There are a ton of shops and warehouses, but I really liked Galerie Le Pacha. The different tribes that make the rugs all have their own distinct style, and there’s even a secret language embedded within some Moroccan rugs—I ended up purchasing a selection of older rugs with a painterly quality to them. It’s also a great way to get to know the locals—you drink tea with them and bargain as they unfurl the rugs.”

LA MAMOUNIA

“For something a little more pampering, I tried a traditional Hammam at La Mamounia, one of the best spas in the world. It’s basically a steam room where you wash yourself and can pay for someone to scrub you, and it’s definitely an unforgettable experience.”
