How to Apply Cream Blush Like a Makeup Artist

Thing of Beauty BY courtney conway 08/29/2017

Cream blush has come a looong way in recent years—heck, it’s showing up on lips and eyelids, even. Pigment queens Michelle, Caroline, and Katherine Ramos—three cosmetic-obsessed sisters who turned their MUA, painter, and writer backgrounds into the makeup line Rituel de Fille—are the opposite of surprised. One of their bestsellers is a richly hued version that we can’t get enough of—so we asked Katherine to tell us how to make the most of it.

ON WHY THEY'RE GREAT IN THE FIRST PLACE

“Cream blushes can be an incredibly versatile, all-in-one product. When done well, they’re perfect for monochromatic looks because the same shade can be applied on the eyes, cheeks, and lips—which is really great for mornings when you’re in a hurry.”

ON GETTING AN A+ SHADE GRADE

“Though you may see a lot of conflicting advice, in our experience your instinct is usually right. If you find yourself coming back to—and feeling good in—any particular color, there's a reason for that, even if you don’t know all the color theory. At the same time, don't be afraid to experiment by going go outside of familiar colors. A shade like Rituel de Fille Desire might seem unusual in the pan because it’s so dark, but the undertones make it uniquely flattering on most complexions—both cool- and warm-toned.”

ON NAILING YOUR APPLICATION

You should apply cream products after foundation and before powder. In terms of tools, there are a lot of options depending on the part of the face and your desired effect. Most people don't think to use a fluffy brush with a cream product, but it can actually diffuse the blush and create a truly natural hint of sheer color that is perfect for cheeks and subtle eye looks. A wet Beauty Blender can help create a dewier, more flushed effect. And fingertips allow for more flexibility with pigmentation—anything from a subtle bit of color to a dramatic application—and are perfect for shading and contouring. Regardless of what tool you choose, if going for a flush, apply cream to the apples of the cheeks and blend outward. If you’re using it to contour, focus on the hollows of the cheeks. We also recommend applying to the eyelids and lips!

ON KEEPING IT FROM SLIPPING AWAY

“For those with very oily skin—or when you’re applying on hot days—you can also dust a translucent powder over the top to extend the life.”
