Technically, Helen Reavey spent two years perfecting Act + Acre, the haircare line she launched with her husband Colm Mackin in early 2019. But really, she’s spent her entire career fine-tuning it, previously working as an in-demand stylist for runway designers and researching how best to care for hair—especially strands that are really in distress. Models backstage would often ask Helen for advice on how to soothe and treat their red, raw scalps after shows, and she saw an opportunity. Enter her idea for a line of scalp-centric haircare, formulated using purifying and hydrating ingredients like rosemary and amaranth oils. The process started out simply, says Helen: “I used to make a lot of stuff at home myself, experimenting with oils and researching what blends well together.”
But Helen also knew that it wasn’t just about the recipe—it was also about how the ingredients were treated on the way to the bottle. So the pair patented (yes, officially!) a method of cold-processing the blend. That might sound weird, but it makes sense: If keeping grocery goods like olive oil and juice chilled helps them achieve peak freshness, why wouldn’t that apply to your conditioner? The oh-so-thoughtfully made formulas deliver a refreshing, non-comedogenic clean slate to your scalp, clearing the way for hair growth and healthy shine. Pretty cool, right?
