Korean beauty has taken the world by storm, but if you’re sensitive to certain ingredients, not being able to read the labels or cruelty-free guarantees can be a barrier to entry. Not so with Cle Cosmetics, which uses what its founder Lauren Jin calls “Korean beauty technology” as the basis for a clean beauty company. Lauren latched onto the idea of creating Cle’s minimally packaged, multifunctional essentials in 2014, inspired by an assignment to create a concept for a beauty line when she was getting an M.A. from the Royal College of Art in London. But she inherited her entrepreneurial itch long before from her mom, who ran a flower shop in California when Lauren was growing up.
Cle’s products are built for someone as busy as she and her enterprising forebears are—someone who “doesn’t have 30 minutes to do her makeup, only seconds,” Lauren says. Take, for example, the company’s Vitamin C serum, which also contains powerhouse ingredients like ferulic acid and phytosqualane, and the foaming oxygen cleanser that’s designed to be spread on dry skin and left to sit for a few beats before you add water, essentially doubling as a quick daily mask. These days, Lauren’s her own best customer—she regularly travels back and forth between L.A. and Korea to source new vegan ingredients and to oversee production, but thanks to her creations, good skin is always just a few minutes away.
