Tess Darrow already had what many would consider a dream career working as a graphic designer for Nike when she left to start her own letterpress company in 1999. Her original plan wasn’t to launch her own line but to use the old-fashioned presses in her studio to print work for other small businesses in Portland, Oregon. But showing off some early work at a trade show, Tess realized there was a demand for the kind of textured, uniquely patterned, and earnest cards she had a knack for, and Egg Press became a reality. Now, two decades later, Tess runs Egg Press alongside Kara Yanagawa, and their bustling shop isn’t just home to a full staff and a dozen presses—it’s also ground zero for Write_On, a campaign aimed at getting people to send more snail mail, featuring tips and tricks, monthly challenges, and a community of like-minded scribes. Talk about making an impression!
