Started in a garage, certified organic, and focused on bettering the planet—the origins of this skincare and hair line may point to an idea born in Bushwick in the early aughts, but Susan Griffin-Black and Brad Black have been putting elbow grease into their essential-oil-based line since 1995 (to put it another way: EO is truly OG).
After a life-changing trip to London’s Neal’s Yard Remedies, Susan joined forces with her then-husband to begin blending simple-but-potent products at home, making use of oils like bergamot, grapefruit, and lavender that can “have a powerful influence on mind and body.” In 2012, EO got its first brick-and-mortar shop in San Francisco, but the other changes along the way have been small, always keeping that focus on those mood-shifting, nose-opening elements at the core of the shower gels, face scrubs, and body oils. “If there’s a shortage of a certain ingredient from a the source we trust, we just won’t buy it until they have it again,” Susan explains. “We want full visibility into not just how our products are made, but also by whom.” After all, what’s more essential than that? — Lauren Elizabeth
