Erica Prince might make delightfully otherworldly vases and vessels, but pottery is just one part of a larger artistic vision she’s been experimenting with since she was a teen. Originally from Toronto, she moved around a lot before getting a BFA in printmaking from the Maryland Institute College of Art, following it with an MFA in painting from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University, and taking her many talents to Brooklyn. Starting to dabble in clay projects at all grew out of her multidisciplinary mindset. As she explains, “I have been drawing these ceramics dating back to 2009, as part of these larger interior sketches. I was just so sculpturally interested in this idea of a multi-opening vessel—I thought it had so much potential. But it wasn’t until 2016 that I actually started making them.”

Erica’s pieces, which feature protruding tubes, offset bases, and curved openings and are made from a combination of handbuilding and extrusion, can hold everything from branches and flowers to make-up brushes, pens, or even candy. Their anemone-like shapes make pretty much anything look good—which means even those of us without Erica’s finely honed visual skills can make a museum-worthy installation in our own home. Says Erica, “I wanted to design this thing that was so open-ended it’s like a choose-your-own-adventure story—it takes on the personality of its owner.”
