Monika Reed comes up with her best ideas while hiking around her Portland, Oregon, hometown, so it makes sense that she’s also committed to making sure the shield-like metal hair bands and astronomy-inspired pins she makes for her label Favor don’t harm the trees and bees she loves so much. As Monika says, “I use gold fill because it has the longevity of solid gold without the environmental harm associated with mining new material—that’s also why I only work with 100% recycled silver and brass.” Those are just a few examples of the extreme attention to detail Monika and her small team pay to her delicate line, which started as a side project while she was in college, majoring in anthropology, but became her full-time gig in 2010. She’s come a long way since then, moving into a dreamy studio in the building that (very fittingly!) used to house the Oregon Brass Works—but unlike the industrial processes that went on there before, Monika still metalsmiths everything by hand. It’s only natural, right?
