For Julia Kostreva, it all started with a planner. In college at the Maryland Institute College of Art, she couldn’t find one that really suited her—one that had a clean aesthetic, with bold numbers and lots of space to write. So, she made one herself.
After graduation, she spent some time wandering—bopping around Europe and living in Japan for three months before feeling the pull of San Francisco, where she moved in 2011 to be close to many of her pals-slash-collaborators.
Settling down in CA and working as a graphic designer and consultant also meant turning her focus back to those planners, using that one-off, on-a-whim creation to spark a namesake company that draws on her design chops in a way that feels both classic and shiny-fresh. “I like reflecting the new—the right now—to blend the shapes and moments together,” Julia says. These days, this vision takes the form of calendars, phone cases, notebooks, and art prints, all of which have a certain mood-boosting quality—something Julia’s all about. “I tend to pick the path that’s most enjoyable,” she explains. “Happiness and being able to explore involves a lot of sacrifice, but if I love what I’m doing—that’s what matters. To be happy day to day.” —kristina erfe
