A few years ago Marta Pia became obsessed with Hindu culture—especially the concept of the third eye, which is said to channel mythical powers. “I really wanted to get an eye tattoo on my finger,” Marta laughs. “But my mother told me to make a ring instead!” She took the suggestion and ran with it, crafting cuffs, pendant necklaces, and yes, rings featuring peepers inlaid with differently stones, from quartz to black onyx and mother-of-pearl. “I like producing my designs in lots of different colors, so people can choose what feels the most personal,” says Marta.
It’s the designer’s own inner eye that steered her towards a career as a jeweler in the first place, even though she originally moved to New York from Spain to study fashion merchandising at FIT. “I didn’t know anybody so I spent all my time studying, and I got such good grades they let me take classes in other majors for free,” explains Marta. One of those classes, Soldering 101, changed her focus completely (she took golf, too, so her backswing ain’t bad either). And after two years working on diamond engagement rings, she's happy to be creating something more accessible. Don't worry, though, she's very much about the individual: “I like producing my designs in lots of different colors, so people can choose what feels the most personal,” says Marta."“I don’t think the obsession will ever die—we all have eyes!”
