What do teddy bears, Legos, and jazz music have in common? They all fuel mrs Jermyn, the cheeky line from Finland-bred, Ireland-educated, New York-based designer Annika Jermyn. When she fell in love with her husband—Mr. Jermyn, naturally—after seeing him jam on his double bass in Dublin, she moved across the Atlantic with him and started making stuffed bears out of his old collared shirts. “My mother told me to keep it as a hobby—so that it didn’t become work,” Annika recalls. As requests started rolling in in 2011, her mom’s advice was ignored, and her line was born.
She’s since added hand-painted, appealingly bold clutches to the mix—a sort of tribute to her early days in NYC. “I was looking around all the time when I first came here, and I would see walls on the subway—they had a really bad paint job or something—and I just thought it was amazing the way there was a cool pattern on it,” she says. “Little bits and pieces like that can be just like artwork.” Especially for Annika, who can funnel that essence into something totally fresh. —koun bae
