The American obsession with French beauty should tell you all you need to know about how high Paris native Valerie Grandury’s standards are for serums, lotions, and cleansers. But it was moving to health-crazed Topanga Canyon in California and experiencing a breast cancer scare that raised her skincare bar even higher. After quitting her commercial production job to study wellness, she started custom-blending creations for herself, friends, and—soon!—clients. “I was not ready to sacrifice performance. I wanted it all: efficacy and purity,” Valerie says of her Odacité creations, built from ingredients that wouldn’t sound out of place on a farm-to-table menu—think matcha powder, carrot seed oil, cumin extract, açai berry, and a foam derived from coconuts. Since she started selling the line outside of her circle in 2009, it’s become a fave of beauty editors and even the woman responsible for Alicia Keys’s no-makeup look. Pretty good L.A. story, huh?
