Before she went to Chapel Hill to study business, Starr Miller grew up on a North Carolina farm that was packed with rescue dogs and creative outlets. “I spent a lot of my childhood doing projects with my mom in her sewing room. She introduced me to beading, assembly work, crocheting, and knitting—basically anything that involved our hands,” Starr remembers. Though she didn’t stick with textile arts, the itch to create was always there during her undergrad years and a stint in consulting afterward. So in 2013, while living in Atlanta, she asked her mom to for a metals 101 class as a Christmas gift. “I really wanted to work with metal and use a torch,” she says. “That was six years ago, and I just never really looked back.”

She hit the ground running, working side jobs to support her jewelry business for about four years until she had built up enough of a following to commit full time to crafting her signature gold bands engraved with celestial patterns, ridged diamond rings, and delicately beaded lariat necklaces. “I get a lot of inspiration from my childhood, like My Little Pony and Lisa Frank stuff,” Starr adds. “It’s not that I want to copy those designs. It’s more about the way that stuff makes my brain feel—that’s what I want to emulate.”
