You’d be forgiven for assuming the creamy cheek colors, juuust metallic eyeshadows, and rich lip shades of the L.A. line Rituel de Fille are the dark magic of otherworldly witches. And you wouldn’t be that far off, except that the witches are actually a sister act—Caroline, Michelle, and Katherine Ramos, whose company technically goes back to their teen years. “Caroline and I first talked about starting a makeup line when she was 13—it was her economics project,” remembers Katherine, who made her name as a writer and fine artist while her sisters ascended the ranks of Hollywood MUAs, smudging smokey eyes for the likes of Evan Rachel Wood and Emily Ratajkowski. The trio had a collective obsession with creating intense hues as naturally as possible—which took off with the discovery of carmine, a scarlet-red beetle shell extract that dates back to Cleopatra. After shipping experimental lipstick samples across the country to each other for years, they took the plunge and launched their tightly edited collection in 2014. The siblings’ potions have been indie faves ever since—but mastering each of those brews was no easy feat. As Katherine explains, “The natural pigments have very different physical properties, so we had to actually create unique, vastly different formulas for each color.” —courtney conway
