The history of the homegoods studio Souda Souda could be presented as a walking tour of Brooklyn. First stop: Parsons School of Design, where the industrial-design brainiacs Shaun Kasperbauer and Luft Tanaka had a kismet-y meeting as undergrads. Now over to Bushwick where, in 2012, the duo decided open a studio in a one-time nightclub with plenty of space for their creative friends who were always dropping in—and for their own experimentation with processes like sewing leather molds for poured-concrete side tables. When Shaun and Luft officially debuted Souda Souda (which means, adorably, ‘Oh yeah!’ in Japanese) in 2013, they unveiled those side tables alongside smaller creations like copper pen holders and accordion-like card organizers. Says Shaun, “Our designs push the boundaries of materials and construction techniques to new levels, producing unique designs with a statement quality.” In the years since, the line’s success has meant traveling far and wide to find the best factories for their quirky, ultra-functional stuff—they’re all over the map, in the best of ways. —leora herman
