You could say Margo Breznick started her candle-making business backwards: First she opened Tatine, a home goods store in Chicago’s Wicker Park, and then in 2011 she started experimenting with blending her own perfectly balanced, not-too-saccharine candles in the basement. The resulting pillars and votives, in scents like a warm and herby mountain honey and bitter orange and lavender, were such smokin’ hits that Margo closed her shop to focus on growing the line (to note: Her soaps and lotions are pretty glorious, too). Still, keeping the flame burning is no easy task. “Everything is made by hand with American soy and beeswax—even our packages are letterpressed and wrapped in our studio,” Margo says. Through all the changes, she’s stuck with the name—Tatine, a reference to her grandmother, has that sweet smell of success.
