What do you get when you combine two sisters with fashion expertise, their skilled shutterbug friend, and a whole lotta Australian sunshine? A line of chic sunglasses that manages to be both retro and futuristic at the same time, of course. Aussie siblings Bec Nolan and Cass Moase and their close pal, photographer Ali Mitton, knew they wanted to make the kinds of cool shades they wished they had handy for styling shoots—pieces that were sixties- and seventies-inspired in shape, but rendered in modern materials like creamy tortoiseshell and pale peach Italian acetate.
So in 2017, they launched a glossy range of frames that’s equal parts young Anjelica Huston and Bondi Beach cool. The trio’s attention to detail doesn’t end with the glasses themselves, though—they’re also committed to keeping Velvet Canyon’s footprint as minimal as possible, both in their Byron Bay, Australia, office and their L.A. one. In practice, that looks like using a limited amount of plastic (the acetate in their glasses is made from recycled wood and cotton) and even keeping their studio lights on using solar power. Plus, 1% of online sales go to Sisterworks, a charity that helps Australian refugees become financially independent. The future is looking pretty dang bright.
