Birchbox's Emerging Beauty Brand of the Moment: One Love Organics

Well, well, well! Mollie Chen of Birchbox is back, sharing her hard-earned skincare knowledge so that you don’t have to try out every foaming cleanser and exfoliating scrub. Here, one of our favorite fellow start-up peeps on her latest discovery.

When it comes to skincare, I’m a bit of a serial dater (or tester). But since One Love Organics came across my desk, I’m seriously considering monogamy. Launched in January, the tiny company is the brainchild of Suzanne LeRoux, a lawyer turned beauty alchemist who saw the need for “a really good, forthright skincare line.” After getting a legal degree, Suzanne realized that all she really wanted to do was study aromatherapy and craft potions. Fast forward a few years and she began developing her own line using 100 percent pure ingredients. The first major decision she made? Cut out the water. In her research, Suzanne found that before the mass chemical age, skincare formulas didn’t actually use the stuff. As she says, “Water actually introduces contaminants, and it doesn’t serve any purpose for her skin.” This also means that her products are super concentrated and last much longer than traditional ones. Once she had her formulas, she brought on her high-school friend, Kendra Inman, a rock-star graphic designer based in L.A. Together, they’re spreading the gospel of easy-to-understand products that keep skin healthy without irritating it. The pared down line consists of a multi-purpose balm, a foaming cleanser, a serum, and a combo scrub and masque. I’ve been using all four for a week now (a record for me), and I’m already smitten. If I had to pick a favorite, it’d definitely be Skin Savior, the hard-working balm — per Suzanne’s tip, I’ve mixed it with mineral makeup to create an ultra-smooth foundation. —mollie
