The 5 Filmmakers Who Inspire Loup’s Clothes

BY genevieve ang 11/18/2013

Before heading to Parsons, Danielle Ribner did some time at the University of Washington, where she majored in film and history. Even though she now spends most of her time creating dressed-up overalls and easy mini dresses, she’s still a bit of a movie obsessive—her Tumblr is flush with film stills—and these are the directors who speak to her in a big, big way.

"Its such a beatiful and calming haven and I am addicted to their waterlemon juice at breakfast. They also have Marmite, which I have a weakness for."

Jon Cassavetes
“He made films in the sixties and seventies—and I’ve seen every one of them. They are dark, raw movies—and very stylized. He was married to the actress Gena Rowlands. I absolutely love her and everything she does. He got great performances out of her.”
Favorites: A Woman Under the Influence and Opening Night

Woody Allen
“A no-brainer. He makes the most inspiring, moving movies. They are so funny and yet push you to a weird boundary where you’re not sure you’re okay with what’s happening—but he makes it so enjoyable. The more modern ones have a very specific style, but I think everyone has used his films for inspiration at some point—everyone has one that they relate to the most.”
Favorites: Manhattan and Annie Hall

Michel Gondry
“His films are so funny and surreal. He does a lot of homemade special effects and doesn’t really use CGI. He is so creative, and his props also look very handmade, like he made them over the weekend with some friends. I find that really cool.”
Favorites: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Science of Sleep

Federico Fellini
“I studied him a lot in school. He makes these wild, grand movies that stay with you long after they end. They are a little surreal and funny—but also dark and emotional. He’s just very typically Italian—he puts men in great suits and cars, and the women are super-sexy. Most of his films are black and white, but they still feel very deep and exciting.”
Favorites: La Strada and 8 ½
