A Jewelry-Obsessive’s Guide to The Met, from Avneet Basi

BY genevieve ang 05/15/2014

“I’m really into ancient jewelry,” Krysos + Chandi’s designer Avneet Basi says. “And the place with the best pieces is the Met.” A loyal visitor since her days at FIT, she’s canvased the (massive, sometimes-overwhelming) space to find the very best of it—we’re talking cool metalsmithing techniques, modern-looking geometric motifs, and finds that are just plain quirky—that she returns to when she needs to re-up on inspo. Here’s the stuff you’ve gotta check out.

South Wing: Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas

"Its such a beatiful and calming haven and I am addicted to their waterlemon juice at breakfast. They also have Marmite, which I have a weakness for."

South Wing: Greek and Roman Art

“Where do I even begin? So many things I’m inspired by in this gallery, but especially the evil eye iconography. There is this cool pair of bronze, marble, and quartz eyes from ancient Greece. They are kind of creepy—they’re the size of a human palm—but have these crazy expressive eyelashes made from metal.”

“I also really love this Greek serpent bangle, found in the Hellentistic treasury. So much ancient gold jewelry looks timeless, and I am obsessed with this high-karat gold that makes it so yellow. It reminds me of the really high-quality Indian jewelry I grew up with.”

“I am particularly struck by this three-finger ring, which I had always thought was a modern invention! The description especially makes me laugh—‘this ring exemplifies a flamboyant type of costume jewelry.’ It is definitely a statement piece.”

North Wing: Egyptian Art

“The Temple of Dendur is on many people’s lists of must-sees at the Met, and while I don’t disagree, I think you’d be missing out if you skipped the few galleries right near it in the North Wing’s Egyptian section. They are filled with so much beautiful jewelry that was unearthed from these tombs. Even the way they are displayed is super-amazing. This collar in particular is insane—intricate and bold and definitely meant for a royal.”
