Take on Lima, Peru, with a Local

Get Outta Town BY jane gauger 12/01/2015

The best way to get to know a city is through a local, and when it comes to Lima, Ariana Bohling—who spends six months a year in the city where her namesake footwear line is made—counts in our book. The designer, who lives in the buzzy Miraflores neighborhood, shared her can’t-miss spots for killer ocean views and the best street food to be had.

EL MALECON, MIRAFLORES DISTRICT

“I live in Miraflores. It’s a safe neighborhood that is well located. I got lucky and found a cool apartment there last year. There’s lots of good food in Miraflores, and the apartment is near the ocean—so I liked that. Here I’m on a bike trail on El Malecón, which is a series of parks that is a part of Lima's entire coastline.”

LARCOMARMIRAFLORES DISTRICT

Larcomar is a shopping mall in Miraflores that overlooks the ocean and is built into the side of the cliffs of Lima. There are some good restaurants there, one of which is called Tanta. It's by Gaston Acurio, a famous chef and restaurateur from Peru. Tanta is a great, affordable place to get typical Peruvian cuisine with a gourmet twist.”

TE QUIERO TE, MIRAFLORES DISTRICT

“If you are a tea-lover like myself, this is a must-visit. Good tea is difficult to find in most supermarkets, so if you are a fan of loose-leaf tea, this is a great place to go. I recommend the Earl Grey.”

MATE MUSEO MARIO TESTINO, BARRANCO DISTRICT

“MATE is Mario Testino's museum, where he has beautiful photo or art exhibits. It's in one of these old renovated mansions in Barranco. A lot of Lima’s old mansions have been remodeled into museums, restaurants, hotels, or historic sites. Barranco is known as the bohemian, artists' neighborhood.”

THE BEACHES, PUNTA HERMOSA DISTRICT

“Punta Hermosa is where many Limeños (people from Lima) go for vacation on the weekends and summers to get out of the city. It's about 45 minutes south of Lima, and it's a great place to go for a weekend getaway.”

FOOD STANDS, LIMA BEACHES

“The ceviche is from a food stand on the beach. You can order at the stand, or sometimes they'll come over to you and take your order. It’s served on a small wooden tray, and you can eat the delicious fresh seafood while relaxing in the sand.”
