Listen Up: Episode 27, Our True-Blue Travel Apps

Listen Up BY lindsay o'rourke 12/01/2015

You may have survived Thanksgiving travel, but odds are, you’ve still got winter trips of some sort lined up. On a special episode, Claire and Erica tackle the apps that will help your phone help you avoid trip pitfalls from wrong turns to missing out on the perfect Instagram-opp. And if you’re lucky enough to be staying put, we’ve got a few staycation tips for ya too.

Episode 27:  True Blue-Travel Apps // LISTEN

Let’s talk about: Brilliant travel apps to help you avoid everything from traffic jams to terrible airport food.

The post-listen link-dumpage…

+ Hopper: For getting the cheapest flights (with price alerts that won’t get lost in your million browser tabs).

+ Waze: The best traffic-navigating thing going—everyone in L.A.’s been using it for years, so you know it works.

+ Gate Guru: Helps you find the best spots to take a nap or eat a meal at airports (like Detroit’s surprisingly great sushi joint Sora).

+ Hotel Tonight: For last-minute hotel deals. In related (but non-app) news: The Wythe Hotel in Brooklyn offers 50% off rooms to locals on certain nights.

+To book a killer home stay: HomeAway, VRBO, and Airbnb, which now offers gift certificates—real smart.

+ Duolingo: To pick up a language when you have a few spare minutes—which is most helpful if you retain what you learned (ahem, Erica on her trip to Portugal).

+ PackPoint: Suggests a packing list based on location and duration (though Claire has some skepticism about letting an app dictate your outfit planning).

+ Despite the fact that weather robots are almost always wrong, Claire’s a fan of Dark Sky’s of-the-moment weather tips; a good free option is Weather Underground.

+ Insta or it didn’t happen: check out Rizon (recommended by our friends at Fathom) to find out when the sun’s setting in your city and the best time to go outside and take pictures. To print and frame all those far-flung selfies, check out the super-cute options offered by Parabo Press.
