The Non-Drying, Skin-Soothing, Acne-Healing Epiphany that Saved Katya Slepak’s Face

BY lauren elizabeth 02/03/2016

Mayala Organics founder Katya Slepak’s struggle with acne started in her teens, which made a later bout with adult acne that much more frustrating. Here, she recounts how she landed on a counterintuitive regime of oils that—who would have known?—was the ultimate skin-savior.

THE PROBLEM

“I sought help from dermatologists, but the conventional approach only created more imbalances. The medicines prescribed only dealt with the symptoms, rather than the internal terrain and overall balance of my skin. The topical solutions I was prescribed severely irritated my skin—and then my dermatologist at the time prescribed Accutane. When I researched the potential side effects, I knew I couldn’t do that to my body.”

THE OIL EPIPHANY

“I first discovered oils through personal recommendations and started doing my own research, which led to me eventually transitioning to only using oils and butters. Using oils like lavender, lemon balm, neroli, sandalwood, Siberian pine nut, borage, and sunflower—they can actually help balance overproduction of sebum, which is typical for problematic skin. Those oils also definitely helped calm, nourish, and hydrate my problematic skin without clogging the pores. Other oils, like argan, rosehip, and gardenia, can also help with discoloration and scars caused by acne. Since I just couldn’t find a pre-made face oil that my skin was happy with, I created the Rejuvenating Face Serum. It was the first anti-aging face oil that helped calm my skin, made my skin feel firmer, more even and hydrated, while softening fine lines.”

THE ROUTINE

“Every morning, I wash my face with a gentle cleanser, like one from Dr. Alkitis, and then I use a toning mist and apply our Rejuvenating Face Serum to moisturize. In the evening, I wash with our my own homemade blend of cleansing clays, which helps to remove my makeup and gently exfoliate. Two or three times a week, I also use a natural Konjak sponge—which is actually a dried plant native to Asia—for deeper exfoliation. Then I use the Dr. Alkitis Soothing Gel with aloe. I follow with our Rejuvenating Face Serum—and on days when my skin is inflamed, I apply a thin layer of a calendula salve, which I blend with other anti-inflammatory herbs and essential oils like the ones I mentioned above.”
