Here’s Why You Should Care About Your Chakras
Even the doorways of India inspire Ajaie Alaie.
There’s a lot of emphasis these days on clothes that are good for the environment around you, but Daniella Samper is one-upping that idea, making pieces to bring good vibes to the environment within you. On textile-sourcing trips to India with her husband Sayam, whose family is originally from Noida, she fell hard for the concept of the seven chakras—which totally redefined how she designs. Now, she folds, sews, and fits each perfectly cropped top and sleek-but-biz-ready skirt with a tiny gold neodymium magnet to focus on one of your body’s energy points. We asked the designer to show us all seven of ‘em so you can target them yourself, too.
What Exactly is a Chakra, Anyway?
"Chakras are energy points in our body from which emotions and thoughts generate. There are seven—the crown, the eye, the throat, the heart, the solar plexus, the sacral, and the root. The ideas is that you can really control your energy by focusing positive thoughts, words, actions around those points. A common way to practice this is through meditation, visualizing the energy emanating from each chakra and the part of your life it affects. The magnets and seams in my clothes are meant to serve as reminders that those points are there—so when you touch that spot, there’s a meditative moment. The more you repeat those things, the more they can help ground you."
So, Let’s Hear More About These Seven.
Daniella’s designs really have a magnetic pull.
THE CROWN CHAKRA
“Located at the crown of the head, it means trusting your intuition and being open to letting go of your attachments. Practice paying attention to this spot by focusing on it and repeating affirmations such as 'My life moves with grace,' 'I am at peace,' and 'I trust my intuition.’”
THE THIRD EYE CHAKRA
“Located between the brows, it’s about seeing everything with mindfulness. The energy in this chakra allows us to experience clear thoughts and see things as they are without distorted perceptions. It will put you in touch with your inner guidance.”
THE THROAT CHAKRA
“It’s in the neck. Try to open up this chakra by accepting your originality and expressing your own voice—always speak your truth.”
THE HEART CHAKRA
"Located in the heart (center of the chest), it signifies our availability to love. It’s there to help you accept yourself and others as who they are—to love unconditionally. It’s your generosity and kindness. Try to spread solidarity and compassion everywhere and always."
THE SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA
“It's in the upper part of the torso above the belly button. It’s the root of your self esteem. Put this chakra to work for you by being proud of your accomplishments, directing your own life, and appreciating your strengths. You must love yourself, accept who you are. The belt on my Of a Kind edition ties across this spot to help the wearer feel confident.”
THE SACRAL CHAKRA
"It's below the belly button in the torso. It’s the center of all emotions, but especially pleasure, intimacy, and connection. The sacral chakra represents your passion, and it’s where creativity generates from. Direct your thoughts to this spot to help yourself really be in the present moment."
THE ROOT CHAKRA
“Located at the base of the spine, it's your survival center. It helps you let go of fears and feel grounded, safe, and secure. It’s about trusting that the universe will provide for you.”
