Tricks for Planning a So-Very-Glam Destination Wedding

Marriage Material BY courtney conway 02/07/2018

Quiz: Does planning a James Bond-themed wedding in Cartagena when you live in NYC sound A) fun or B) insanely stressful? Pili Restrepo made sure it was mostly answer A when she committed to the whole forever thing with her college sweetheart Josh at a shindig in her home country, Colombia, and the detail-oriented jeweler did it without sacrificing a shred of her impeccable personal style. Here’s how.

MAKE A MOOD BOARD

“I think that the best thing that you can do for yourself and the other people that are going to be helping you is to have a clear vision of what you want, so make sure you have a mood board. It’s important to not overthink it. Just sticking to who you are is really key. I didn’t really focus on a lot of trends or what the magazines were predicting was going to be in. I just went with what I really wanted, and that made our wedding so much more unique and special. It was more of a reflection of ourselves.”

ACTUALLY ASK FOR (AND HIRE!) HELP

“I was in New York and planning from far away since the wedding was in Cartagena, and having a wedding planner made everything so much easier. I needed as much help as possible, especially since I was running a business at the same time, so admitting that was part of it, too.”

TAKE CARE OF MOM

“People told me that my mother was going to take longer to get ready than me, which wasn’t something I had thought about and was true. I would suggest hiring a makeup and hair person just for your mom. It will make her feel special.”

DON’T GO TOO REMOTE

“It’s important, if you’re doing a destination wedding, to choose a place where people can roam without the need of a map or much guidance. Every minute counts when you’re celebrating abroad, so avoiding any unnecessary travel time is important. The last thing you want to hear is that someone is lost and can’t find your wedding.”

TAKE INSPO FROM YOUR OWN FAM

“I was never the type of girl who knew exactly what I wanted for my wedding. I really wanted to create just a bigger version of the parties that we’d throw at home and when I was growing up, so I took a lot of inspiration from my childhood and revisited the movies I grew up seeing that I love. I really love James Bond movies and those stylish parties the characters would throw at their homes, so that was a lot of my inspiration. I also looked back on the trips my mom took with my dad when they were young, and seeing old pictures of them really helped to set the mood.”

DON’T PHONE IN THE DANCING

“I think the advice of taking dancing lessons is really fun. You’ll probably think you don’t need it, but think of it more like the perfect distraction from the stress of planning that makes a great date night. We have a friend that does a class in New York, so that was really fun.”

SAY YES TO AN OUTFIT CHANGE

“Definitely change into a second outfit after the wedding so you can dance. It’s a game-changer. You’re not worried about people stepping on your dress, and you’re able to just move around and be comfortable. It doesn’t have to be expensive—I found mine at a vintage store. Changing into a shorter dress shifts the mood and makes you more comfortable.”
