Kara Yoo moved to Vancouver in 2001, and she’s not planning on going anywhere anytime soon. “This is my home now,” she laughs. She sure has made the most of it: Her shop is in The Beaumont Studios, a collective workshop, art gallery, and event space that serves as a hub for local creatives, and she has plenty of other insider recs to keep you cool when you’re in town.

ROYAL DINETTE

“My fiancé and I like to go here for dinner. It’s a casual farm-to-table spot, and they have really good cocktails. They also have guest chefs come in and cook special dinners, so it’s like a little event.”

HOUSE SPECIAL

“I love this modern Vietnamese spot. It’s in Yaletown—my friend opened it up a little while ago. The food is just really good. I usually go there with my girlfriends, and even if we don’t eat, we just hang out by the bar.”

BEAUCOUP BAKERY

“I go to this pastry shop in the Kits neighborhood a lot. They have excellent croissants.”

AJISAI

“The Japanese food here is really amazing—we’re right by the coast, so the fish is super fresh. Everywhere I travel, everyone tells me where to go get sushi, and it’s never as good as the sushi here. It’s also really well-priced.”

KEEFER BAR

“This is a really fun place to get drinks. They have an endless list of cocktails, so you can work your way through it and always try something new.”

MEET FRESH

“A great place for Taiwanese shaved ice with toppings like herbal grass jelly, taro mochi balls, and brown-sugar, molasses-y icy goodness.”

STANLEY PARK

“On the weekend, I love biking around the seawall, which extends into Stanley Park. It looks like you’re biking into the ocean, which is just so cool. The seawall loop takes about an hour to bike, and it’s mostly flat. I try to do it at least once every summer.”

GULF ISLANDS

“If you have time, take a day or weekend trip to the Gulf Islands—they’re a peaceful oasis really close to the city.”

ONE OF A FEW

“This was one of my first stockists. They’ve been around for at least 10 years and have a really awesome assortment of jewelry and clothes.”

WOO TO SEE YOU

“Right on Main Street, they’ve got the best clothes and fun little accessories.”

MUCH AND LITTLE

“They have a great little curated selection of textiles, toys, candles, and gifts.”

VANCOUVER SPECIAL

“This is one of my favorite home goods stores on Main Street. They have a  lot of really neat designer homewares like ceramics, mugs, and pillows. I’m in love with the miniature serving dishes they sell there, and I always stop in when I’m nearby.”

WELKS

“They have a huge assortment of home goods. It’s one of my favorite places to go just see what’s new.”

DAISO

“This is a huge Japanese $2 store. They have hair elastics, the cutest little stickers, and things like tiny erasers. I can definitely go and lose hours there looking at all the perfect little designs.”
