Astrology Plus Magic! What You’ll Find Inside a Victorian Grimoire

Stuff We Love 03/01/2018

If you’re not sure what a Victorian grimoire is, join the club. To start with, a grimoire is a magical dictionary or spellbook of sorts. The most popular Victorian version is A Victorian Grimoire, which is packed with everything from gardening tips, to love spells and astrological insights. Originally published in 1992, the book was and remains, a niche fave (we can’t prove they’re connected but it also came out just a few years before The Craft and Practical Magic). We were introduced to it’s magical existence by oil painter Kristin Texeira, who discovered the book as part of her research on ancient runes and symbols, and uses it as inspiration for her astrology-based works. Given that witchcraft is making a comeback these days (just ask Adam Rippon), we thought it made sense to ask her to share a few of her favorite tips and tidbits from the genre to get you going.

KNOCK OUT NEGATIVITY

“There are a bunch of ideas to get rid of bad energy. One is to write down the name of the negative entity or idea, put name in a bowl of water, and stick in the freezer. Then it won’t be able to spread the bad energy anymore. Or, place a mirror by a window facing outward so it will reflect negative energy that is heading your way. But you have to make sure you never have a mirror turning its back on you at home, since it brings the evil spirits out.”

TAKE NOTE OF THE MOON WHEN YOU GARDEN

“Depending on where the moon is at on the zodiac calendar, you should focus on certain aspects of gardening. So when the moon is in Leo, it is a time of harvest, but do so with caution. The lion is saying things are abundant now, but we have to prepare for later—so can some of those veggies and dry out the herbs you've got growing.”

DO A SPRINGTIME PLANTING SPELL

“Write a wish or want down on a piece of paper, fold the paper three times, and soak it in water. Once it dries, burn it and make the wish in the smoke that rises. Then take the ashes and plant them with flowering seeds. When the flower blooms, your wish should come true!”

TURN YOUR GARDEN INTO A CLOCK (BECAUSE, WHY NOT)

“This sounds very tricky to construct, but it is possible to design a garden that looks like a clock and also has a spread of flowers that open and close at a certain time of day to tell time by. Some flowers are even named after their timelines, like Jack-go-to-bed-at-noon. We’re all so busy and tied to our phones, so it’s interesting to consider putting this much effort into telling time by the sun.

MAKE WOOD WORK FOR YOU

“If you're doing some meditating by the fire, it is suggested to add sandalwood, nutmeg, mugwort, or lemongrass to the flames to intensify psychic awareness (plus make it smell good). Also on the topic of wood: If you feeling a little low in the bank account, try putting a $20 spot in a cedar box to help safeguard your finances.”
