Top of Mind: Mercado Global’s Meg Koglin on Unplugging and Picking Up Speed

Top of Mind 05/11/2018

Welcome to Top of Mind, featuring a designer who’s been a part of the Of a Kind fam since wayyyyyy back (like, before Snapchat). In this installment, the globetrotting Mercado Global designer Meg Koglin takes a break from Guatemalan fabrics to share the de-stressing steps and Portuguese snacks she can’t get enough of.

THE BEST ADVICE:

“Stop worrying about things that haven’t even happened.”

ON WORKING BETTER WITH AGE:

“I’m faster than I was when I started, and I used to overthink too much. I came to design by way of engineering, and so I approached it by way of overly complicated math and architectural pattern-making. I’m still a stickler about details and performance (and love reminding high-school kids of all the cool careers that are related to geometry and algebra), but I think my initial creative concepts are more organic and loose now. Perhaps I’m more in tune with my intuition. It could also just be easier because exposure to visual and tactile inspiration has grown over the years, and I have a larger inspo bank to pull from now. Two awesome things about getting older!”

GETTING ON THE BULLET-JOURNAL TRAIN:

“I’ve been bullet journaling the past few months. It provides a structure for me to build space for priorities instead of running on a hamster wheel of task-task-task or getting lost in an Instagram tunnel. I use it for short-term and long-term planning, analyzing backward, and dreaming ahead. The access to my most inspired headspace only comes when I have other things in order, including the boring but necessary basics. I’m a jeans and tee girl, and fittingly, my b-journal is a plain Moleskine, and I use Muji ballpoint pens.”

HOW TO BE GRATEFUL (EVEN FOR THE ROUGH STUFF):

“When I’m in a slump, I get on my yoga mat or go be active outdoors. I also keep a daily gratitude journal. When I’m recording something I’m grateful for each day, it also extends to a general perspective shift of opening my eyes to the existing grace and goodness in the day-to-day.”

WORKING AROUND THE WORLD:

“Traveling has been one of my primary priorities the past few years, and I’ve been to so many amazing places! Most recently, I spent a month working remotely in Portugal. My favorite part of living in Lisbon was walking around and getting lost in its beauty. It’s like a real-life Wes Anderson set, and the colors, tiles, patterns, light, and architecture made my heart explode. If you’re there, go to the Museu do Azulejo and the National Coach Museum. Also stop by Embaixada Shopping Gallery for its gorgeous interior architecture and head upstairs to my favorite shop there, Fair Bazaar. It’s a sustainable lifestyle boutique with fabric that even makes a picky designer squeal.”

THE BOOK SHE CAN’T STOP THINKING ABOUT:

Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi.”

HER CURRENT FEMALE SINGER-SONGWRITER SOUNDTRACK:

“I’ve been listening to Maggie Rogers and Charlotte Day Wilson a little obsessively. They’re so talented and are hitting my vibe.”

ON REGIONAL PIZZA AFFILIATIONS:

“I didn’t even think I liked Chicago-style pizza—and I grew up near-ish Chicago—until I went to Emmett’s in NYC. Don’t say you don’t like deep-dish until you’ve had theirs.”
